Today Aphra Brandreth met with local residents who are part of the Hammersmith Bridge SOS group to listen to their concerns regarding enforcement of the one-way system across Hammersmith Bridge and the need for cyclists to dismount when crossing the narrow bridge walkways. Following the closure of the central carriageway of the bridge whilst the stabilisation works are carried out, Cyclists have been asked to dismount when crossing the bridge, however not all cyclists have been adhering to this rule. There is also often confusion around the one-way system, causing extra congestion on what are very narrow and busy walkways. There have been some incidents of cyclists knocking into pedestrians, and a number of residents are understandably concerned about safety when crossing the bridge.
Aphra was able to provide residents with an update from the Project Supervisor overseeing the Hammersmith Bridge project. Below are set out proposed next steps to improve enforcement on the bridge:
Law Enforcement Team
A law enforcement team will be making more presence on the bridge. They will have powers of enforcement unlike the current marshals.
CCTV
Next week they will be installing cameras on the footways. The cameras will be in operation 24/7. Where incidents are reported the video footage can be reviewed and provided to the police.
Signposting
Current signposting is unclear, with an excess of signs some of which are not relevant. It is agreed that there will be a review of signage, with a removal of redundant signs, and improvement of signage where necessary. Aphra has requested simple, clear signs and has provided the Project Supervisor with suggested signposting images and text provided by local residents.
Local residents from the Hammersmith Bridge SOS group provided further comments and suggestions on this plan which Aphra will be following up directly with the Project Supervisor.
