^ Aphra on a visit to Barlows to learn more about their Apprenticeship offering.
In celebration of National Apprenticeship Week (9-15 February 2026), Aphra Brandreth, MP for Chester South and Eddisbury, today launched a new Apprentice of the Year competition to highlight and recognise the exceptional apprentices in our community.
Alongside on-the-job training, apprentices spend at least 20% of their working hours completing classroom-based learning with a college, university or training provider which leads to a nationally recognised qualification. Young people have a diverse range of career pathways available to ensure they learn the skills they need to succeed in a career they love.
Across the UK, local employers, large and small, have embraced apprenticeships as a way to support skills development, strengthen their workforce and help young people succeed in their chosen fields. Apprenticeships are available at many levels and in a broad range of sectors, from business and engineering, to healthcare and digital technology, offering diverse pathways to long-term employment.
Under the last Government, more than 5.7 million apprenticeships were delivered, helping individuals to build skills and gain experience that directly supports economic growth and productivity. Apprenticeships also provide opportunities for all, with routes for adults and younger learners alike, providing flexible ways into employment and career progression.
Launching the competition, Aphra explained,
“Apprenticeships are an incredibly valuable way to give people the skills they need for a career they’ll love. It’s the on-the-job training that is so essential and really sets people up for the future. I’ve launched this competition to recognise those who go above and beyond every day and to shine a spotlight on the value apprenticeships bring to employers and our local economy. I can’t wait to read all of the nominations.”
